Upcoming shows! I Have a show happening at the Uptown in downtown Oakland, from May 31st, until July 31st. Here is a teaser, it will be 3 different bodies of art. The first being a "Specimen Jar series." The idea is to provide old school specimen jars, with an interesting twist. Instead of making the creatures inside realistic (out of silicone for example) I want to make them out of fabrics or recycled materials to add an interesting twist. This jelly fish is my first prototype. I'm already thinking about changing the labels, I was originally thinking of aged type writer paper, giving it an old cataloging, library feel. However I think gilded gold plates might look better with the theme.

Hello! I have been horrible about updating this blog since moving to California, however I'm now making an effort to be better about it. I would love to update the look of this thing, and post a lot more pictures of my artwork. I'm working on a few freelance project's along with my new (ish, since march, job.) I recently finished some puppet's for a film, I seamed, painted, and made the costumes for these guys. All the same character 3 costume changes. Also if you are still in the Portland area, Brad's previous film "24 Frames" is playing locally right now, I made the costumes for that as well! Yay!

Before moving to San Francisco I took a break to work back at Trader Joe's in between projects. (I love working for Trader Joe's) here is a few images of some of my favorite things. I forgot to snap images of my "Big Game" Chicken wings and chips, as well as a couple other favorites ( hoot do you love).. but I will post those on here soon as well!

I love that Trader joe's still supports Artist and staffs 2-5 artist for all their store signage per store. It's a great company and I feel very lucky to always be able to have a place to touch base at where I can work with other talented artist while still enhancing my artistic abilities.

For this commercial I did a lot more Silicone work, I cast the lizard and seamed him. It was a large process first involving him being cast in foam latex then clipping it back and skinning him with silicone, I then painted it all in, seamed him, and because of his texture I was not just able to sand the line away but I had to do many passes of painting on the texture in layers. The butterflies also had tiny armatured arms and legs, which I made cast, and seamed and hand applied the bug like notches. I also shimmer painted their boots, and had made the antenna. The cricket was also a proud moment, I wired, cast and seamed his very tiny arms, paint in cast and seamed his legs, and hand made his antenna. The mice I made the silicone ears, and tails, to which I also made the molds. The 2nd lizard was the same as the first, as well as I made her silicone. The list goes on, but I was heavily involved allover the process for all the puppets, and learned a lot from Katie at Laika house, who graciously taught me mold making amoung many other things. There is one more commercial to come, then i will post making of pictures. Yay!

The maps are to come, stuck on camera, no way to remove the images.. as well as some additional paintings, in the meantime here are a 3-d pickle, with watercolored layers. A 3-d eiffle tower, with layered newspaper images, then painted and high glossed. A small fishy painting, water colored mounted on acrylic, also high gloss. The bad part about my new found love for high gloss is my camera does not respond well to such shineyness, there for the pictures are blown out, and the detail wouldn't show up at all with out a flash, these were quick photos before the items were given away.. also a small snail scale photo.. and a birthday card i made for my dad of a bionic octopuss after he had heart surgery.

SOoo it has been a very long while since i've updated this blog thing, so i'm going to do it in a few posts, one being birthday gifts I've made in the past few months, one of my map series of paintings, and one of 3-d paintings.

Portland and the big move.. The move was good I started work the morning after i arrived here, literally less then 8 hours after my plane landed, since then it has been non stop working and getting settled, with a short trip back to the michigan lands mixed in.

I'm working on a couple projects, I can not yet name, but they are pretty cool and I'm really enjoying all the work, and learning a lot of new skills, like mold making. Which i'm pretty pumped about.

Anyways, enjoy the new artwork, some of the photos are low quality, but the paintings are located back in michigan so updates to be had in october, also coming soon a crossword series.. !

My friend's Kristin and Curtis are getting married, and to celebrate their union I made them a watercolor painting! I didn't take any detailed pictures yet, but I have a couple from them opening it at the shower, which is awesome because you can see curtis's expression. This was was a 12" by 12" whater color painting on bristol board with acrylic highlights, layered ontop of textured canvas paper.

Vampire Bats!

Sooo all my hard work at the bat house has paid off, I was able to name a vampire bat! I named her Veronica!!

The bat zone received a colony of bats, 20+ Through different methods, and 3 butcher houses, they are able to maintain recycled blood for the bat's to drink, providing a rather educational and curious new addition to the bat zone. I'm so excited about them! The detroit free press wrote a great article, and it was on the front page

Originally I was interested in working with the animals to learn more about my favorite creatures, but I ended up being able to repair their educational bat displays which have bounced around from museum to museum and suffered many cracks and shoty repairs. I was pretty pumped about fixing the displays! Anyways I wanted to share some of my repair photos as well as pictures of the actual animals. Another great thing about working with the animals i'm able to get really close for photos!

For my Mom's birthday this year I decided to theme everything around squirrels, I bought her an adorable cement birdbath shaped like a tree with a squirrel drinking from it, Painted a squirrel on the wall mural in the upstairs hallway ( which I pencil sketched about ten years ago), and made a squirrel birthday card, a squirrel eating a sandwich.. because squirrel's love sandwiches! Hoy! So I worked on the feature film "Coraline," I've never taken the time to blog about that experience or post pictures, Soooo here we go!

For the film I was a puppet fabricator, specifically casting and seaming silicone. I also coordinated hands about half way through the production and was responsible for how many hands were needed for which shots and when... .. this was a great experience and I worked with a lot of very talented artists.
For anyone who doesn't know much about stop motion puppetry, basically my job was to erase the seam that occurs after silicone, foam, or resin are cast in a 2 or 3 part mold.

Like the ninja of stop motion, the better my job is done, the less you know I'm there. The challenging part about this job is not only the ability to sit and hold silicone as it's drying (for a very long time), but also repairing the torn silicone/foam.. on set. This is when you then take your puppet first aid kit, go on set to fill in a tear the size of a pin head, while leaning over some lights, and not touching the puppet or moving any of the very important "Hot" items.
The most rewarding part of my job were the days when I was asked to problem-solve some tiny function of a puppet part. For example, in the scene where Coraline removes her boot and throws it at Wybie, I had the fun task of figuring out how to make a removable silicone boot that could hold its shape and then be thrown. It needed to be strong enough to be tied into the set, while being flexible enough to slide over the heel of the foot without tearing, then be able to bend for squash and stretch as it's gliding through the air.
There are many other things to talk about from this film, and I will try to post once a week some small experience from Laika. Here are some pictures until then!

This is my partner in crime Sid! Notice she is working on an Adult Forcible hand, on her desk you can see many hands we were working on together, as well as my purple hand holder! ( sneaky Sid) Working with small batches of silicone (the same used to cast items), we used a series of techniques to apply it, masking the seam underneath. We used the same techniques to paint the nails and shading on the hands.

I made a series of trees, the paintings start with a collage of news paper images, it's then gessod over , then a thin layer of greyish tones is applied, I then paper mache the 3-d tree's, and once they are dry I either collage more images on top, or spray paint layers of color which I then finish off with acrylic textures. The first two are collaged, made for my friend Margaret and George. The other series of trees were for the show at the biddle gallery. In this post I've also included a finished Seahore painting. Water colors on acrylic. And lastly some holiday themed felt friends, a snow man with a roving nose. a gingerbread person, and my first attempt at lose felt (roving) sculpture, which resulted in a kinda strange looking penguin friend.

The Biddle Gallery (http://www.biddlegallery.com/) in Wyandotte, MI is having a Halloween show. It includes myself , and other great artist, such as Brent Harris ( www.Robotchicks.com) Each artist had to make a digital pumpkin. I made an upside down bat. I also made 3 outdoor themed multimedia paintings, 5 spooky cupcakes (a mix of watercolor, acrylic, and paper mache), 5 Day of the dead candy skulls ( Paper Mache, glitter, glow in the dark paint, acrylic) and a new line of screen printed plush toys ( Screen printed by my friend Ken at his new business located in Clawson, MI (http://www.triple-thread.com/). Here short description about the paintings, These belong to Amelia and Mar's in Oakland, California, the cupcake is from a series of 15, this one was lemon/lime sunshine. It was a play on textures, It's a lot of acrylic layers over a watercolor wrapper. The Squid and baby Jellyfish, it was a play with colors, and sea creatures. A series of 30. The Sketch is not mine, but i love that my paintings often find homes next to other great pieces of art...

These live in Royal Oak, Michigan with Emma. The Green Squid and Seahorse were my favorite of the series, the baby orange octopuss, is only 2 by 3 inches, and was my least favorite. I love that she put them together, and again my art finds a home next to such awesome pieces!

I have been filling more dino orders. This week I made a child safe stego, he is 7" by 4". His legs are fused on, and his eyes are felt instead of buttons. I also made a HUGE dino 400% larger than all the others. I'm going to create dino mobiles soon, I'm also considering having a booth and a detroit art show in August. I'll keep updating. I'm also restoring the bat sculptures at the bat house, I'll post before and after photos when I'm finished. We have 2 baby bats at the bat house, they're adorable. They are Jamaican bats, which are about 2" tall right now. The also are very fluffy, similar to baby birds. As they get older there shoulders will spread out.

Brent Harris and I traded! i helped him seam and paint his MegaBots, and he helped me refine my logo! Here are the refined Logos! Yay!!

I've decided to make a tag to put around the necks of all the little dinos who find homes. I'm thinking of calling them RAWRZ. Here are a couple tag tests, let me know what you think. One is not colored, because I'm debating if I want to paint them, or print them on colored paper, or give the a feltish look similar to the stegosaurus. Thanks!

Another Dino/ Tree Painting.

I made another felt Dino, a triceratops. He is slightly different from the last couple, because rather than have a silhouetted profile, his forehead is more 3-d to allow for all 3 of his horns. This dino is smaller, 2" by 1".

The tree painting was made as a gift for my friend Brian, I wanted to make him something, dark, simple and moody. It's 24" BY 24"

Hello! Currently I have been working on a 24" by 24" acrylic painting of a forest with goats, as well as felt animals. I began my interest with felt animal making when I was a little girl, in my college years I became obsessed with soft sculpture stop motion puppets. I recently began making puppets again, and decided to make a series of small animatable objects. First i made 130 felt snails, all with simple wire armatures inside. Today I created mini dinosaurs! Their legs are movable. They Measure 3" by 2". I think i'm going to make a series of dinosaurs, and maybe turn it into a mobile. Not quite sure. Take care!

Art Show/ Website/ Random updateness

Art show!! So It has been way to long since I’ve blogged about anything. I have been insanely busy! I installed the art show, and had the opening the following Friday, it went extremely well and I was incredibly surprised with the positive feedback! This was my first show, and I’m looking forward to installing a few more! Basically, the show was 3 themes, Cupcakes, Sushi and Sea Creatures. I then used different textures and mediums to make frosting, rice, bubbles, water… I wanted to make a really colorful collection of content that was just pleasing to the eye and fun to look at. I made 130 felt snails, and 39 paintings, as the paintings sell I’m swapping them out. I’m trying to get a nice camera to take high resolution photos to post, but until then I’m attaching a few from the opening!

Website, I updated some things on my website, made my demo reel a bit longer, I’m trying to make it more solid, it’s a work in progress so check back often.

Travels, I’ll be in Portland, OR from May 5^th-12^th and LA from May 12^th-16^th. I’m mostly going to visit friends, and check out the local art scenes!

Right now I’m working on a giraffe birthday card, I’ll try to post images when it’s complete!

Ann Arbor Film Festival

This week from the 24th-29th is the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and I've ben here all week. It's ben a very interesting and motivating experience. The reason this festival is a lot different from the other festivals I've attend ( Ottawa International, PlatForm, Kafi..) is that it is primarily focused around experimental animation films. To be completely honest I often find experimental animation very hard to watch, and prefer narrative pieces. However, a few of the films have caught my attention, one in particular, "Danse Macabre" .

I also really enjoyed the film "Operated by Invisible Hands".

I'm really looking forward to tomorrows programming, it's a showcase of kid friendly animations, including one from my former professor Dave Chai!!

I intend to use this blog as a way of showing current art projects. Right now i'm finishing 3 painting series and 130 felt snails to hang at the Landmark Main Art in Royal Oak, MI. The Galley will go up starting March 19th, 2009. I'm really excited!! In my next post I'll show some examples from the show, and some pages out of my sketchbook. Yay!!
